Review: Tiger Woods – “How I Play Golf”

I’m not usually a big fan of golf instruction books written by tour pros.

The exceptions? Ben Hogan’s Modern Fundamentals of Golf, and Jack Nicklaus’ Golf My way.

Like a lot of us, I enjoy the Butch Harmon, David Leadbetter and Hank Haney versions much more.

For that reason, I never really looked through this book when it first came out a few years ago.

Tiger is obviously the outstanding player in the game today. And he is just about as good, or better, as anybody at every facet of the game. OK... maybe driving accuracy aside.

What caught my eye, while recently thumbing through the book, are the sequence photos of his full swing.

They were taken as he was coming off the Tiger Slam, and in many ways the swing you see here is absolutely textbook.

The book is worth buying just for the stop action sequences of his swing at the time.

What I like about the book....

Yes, it does cover a lot of ground you may see elsewhere... most instruction books do. But it is well rounded in covering all aspects of the swing and the game from tee to green, and in a fresh way.

Tips on hitting specialty shots are very well done, and the photos do an exceptional job of sending the message home.

The only area that could use more meat is course management. Something he really excels at.

But most people getting this book will be more interested in dissecting his swing and seeing how he approaches the different aspects of the game from a technical perspective.

Here's just a little of what you’ll find...

  • Practical, proven techniques for building a lasting and repeating swing.

  • An easy but effective way to handle greenside rough.

  • A foolproof technique for making the 3-wood chip shot.

  • The one way to make the ‘hard’ flop shot easy.

  • His no-fail setup for hitting effective bunker shots.

  • Techniques for turning your irons into true offensive weapons.

  • ‘Act naturally’ and start nailing your fairway woods.

  • Powerful techniques for smoking your drives.

  • Getting your momentum back after ending up in trouble.

  • His building blocks for mental toughness.

  • Time tested methods for fitness and strength.

    And much more...

    Concluding thoughts....

If you’re looking to refine your swing mechanics you need to add this instruction book to your collection.

I found the sections on executing full shots among the finest I’ve read. In short, one of the best golf instruction books available at any price, and a keeper in my golf library.
