Quick Tip #82: Do You Practice With a Purpose?
|
If you're serious about your golf game, then practice sessions are an indispensable part of your overall improvement plan.
But before you buy your next token and walk off with a jumbo bucket of balls, you need to know why you're at the range and what you're going to do there...
Maybe you're breaking in a new club so you're familiar with it when you get to the course.
Maybe you're trying to refine a troublesome part of your swing.
Maybe you're working on a drill to ingrain a point from a recent lesson.
Or maybe you're trying to learn how to draw or fade the ball at will.
No matter what, when you go to the practice range, before you start taking any swings, know why you're there.
Tiger Woods, Jack Nicklaus, Vijay Singh or Jim Furyk, never aimlessly hit balls at the practice range. And while I'm sure they enjoy their practice sessions, there's a definite purpose to each shot they take. That's one of the reasons they're so good.
Unfortunately, most practice ranges encourage the mindless approach to hitting golf balls. It's pretty easy to settle down and run through 75 balls in no time. You look back and it's all a blur.
As a hard core range rat myself, I’ve found that the only way to make practice sessions productive is to have a definite purpose in mind. At the very least, make sure you hit to defined targets.
Whether you’re a tour pro or simply an aspiring golfer, purposeful practice is one of the only sure fire ways to lower golf scores.
