Review:
Classic Golf Instruction
by Chistopher Obetz.

If you've been playing golf for any length of time, then you've probably read your share of golf instruction books. And for most of us, they're the basis of a continuous improvement plan.
| |
When you’re looking to improve your swing, the one essential element a good instruction book has to have is a clear way to illustrate the fundamental swing keys.
| |
It doesn’t matter how well written an instruction book is, or who wrote it. If the swing isn’t clearly portrayed, then it simply fails to convey the message.
| |
That being said, Classic Golf Instruction isn’t a traditional instruction book, and doesn’t embrace a particular methodology. Instead, it’s a collection of the best illustrations from Anthony Ravielli’s body of work.
| |
You’ve probably seen Ravielli’s illustrations in numerous books and magazine articles. In fact,
Five Lessons: The Modern Fundamentals of Golf, which many consider to be the golf instruction bible, was illustrated by him.
| |
Many instructors, when faced with the task of conveying the various aspects of the golf swing, turned to Ravielli.

The complete golf swing depicted in a unique way...
| |
Obetz takes the best of Ravielli’s drawings to illustrate the grip, stance, backswing, downswing, even different specialty and recovery shots.
| |
And while photography and stop action swing sequences are great ways of illustrating the swing, Ravielli’s drawings can’t be rivaled for their incredible detail and realism. If there is a better illustration of the proper grip than the one Ravielli produced for Ben Hogan’s Five Lessons, I haven’t seen it.
| |
Sometimes, the biggest battle when you’re struggling with your swing is finding the right mental image. I’ve always returned to Ravielli’s drawings to regain the feeling for the right takeaway, downswing or follow through position.
| |
The crazy thing, in light of today’s state-of-the-art photography, is that Ravielli’s illustrations seem more realistic than the actual thing itself. And what brings some additional life to his illustrations is the analysis provided by some of golf's leading teachers and touring pros detailing particular aspects of the swing

If you’re looking for help when your swing eludes you, or want an excellent companion to any instruction book in your collection, then Classic Golf Instruction should find a spot on your bookshelf.
